AUSCHWITZ VICTIMS REMEMBERED
Polish President Lech Walesa, Israeli parliament speaker Shevah Weiss and Nobel laureate and Auschwitz survivor Elie Wiesel led a group of 5,000 mourners through the gates of Auschwitz today, offering prayers and appeals for remembrance and peace on the 50th anniversary of the camp's liberation by Russian troops. 1.5 million people died in the installation, the largest of the Nazi death camps. "Look and listen as the victims quietly walk toward dark flames so gigantic that the planet itself seemed in danger," Wiesel urged. "Now and then we ask ourselves what is the lesson? The lesson, I believe, is not to yield to hatred, to fight fanaticism and the violence and the terror."
