AMERICANS . . . IRAQIS ABUSING THEM

Two Americans serving an eight-year prison sentencefor crossing the Kuwait border into Iraq told a CNN reporter today that they have endured "terrifying" interrogation sessions at the hands of the Iraqis. David Daliberti said he suffered a heart seizure after the sentencing last Saturday. Fellow prisoner William Barloon told of banging on the cell door for three hours before medical help was given to Daliberti. CNN reported that both men shed tears while discussing their families, and that the prisoners have not been allowed to change their clothes. CNN was not allowed to bring cameras or tape-recorders into the prison.TIME Middle East bureau chief Dean Fischersays it appears the men are "hostages" who may remain jailed "for quite some time" because the U.S. will not "play that kind of game."
