ROMANIAN AIR CRASH KILLS 59

All 59 people on board a Tarom Airlines Airbus A310 bound for Brussels were killed when the planecrashedin a sleet storm minutes after taking off from the Bucharest airport today. The dead -- whose body parts were strewn across the frozen ground 12 miles outside the city -- include 10 crew members and passengers of several nationalities (including three Americans) plus one infant and one child. Although the cause of the catastrophe remains unclear, one unnamed witness told the Associated Press that thewide-body, twin-engine jetlinerexploded in mid-air before it went down. While the airline and the government refused to comment on that observation, Tarom did say that it received an anonymous bomb threat targeting a flight on the same route earlier this month. No bomb was found on the earlier plane.
