Taking the Internet on the Road

A world without wires — it's the dream of every technology junkie. We want total access to information anytime and anyplace. Companies like Sprint are trying to get us there with products like PCS Data, a cable that lets you hook up your cell phone to your computer and dial up a remote Sprint modem, which calls your regular ISP to access the Internet ($99 for residential Sprint customers). This means, in theory, that you'd be able to do things like check your e-mail anywhere.

I found that it worked pretty well. The only snag was that after I installed the dial-up software on my laptop, at first the program couldn't detect that the phone was already attached to my computer. This turned out to be a conflict with my Palm Pilot's use of the same communications port, which I fixed easily. MORE >>
