CLINTON, CONGRESS UNITE IN TERROR CRACKDOWN

Senate leaders responded swiftly toPresident Clinton's request for broad new powers to fight terrorism, promising to pass sweeping new legislation in response to theOklahoma City bombing. "I know I speak for all the Senate when I say that we stand with all the people of Oklahoma, committed to doing all that is needed to protect America from the terrorist threat," Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole said in a speech on the Senate floor. Democrats backed him. Senate Judiciary Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) said he and Dole would introduce a bill that combines tougher penalties for terrorist acts in the United States with thepresident's proposals. Clinton said he would create an FBI-run center fordomestic counterterrorism. He also requested far more authority for federal agents to wiretap, trace phone calls, examine phone bills and inspect other consumer records in efforts to identify terrorist cells before they commit crimes.
