A CONTINUING THREAT

Though no one has formally claimed responsibility for the attack, Mubarak has survived at least two other plots since 1992 amid a campaign by Muslim fundamentalists to replace Egypt's government with strict Islamic rule. Today's incident was the most serious attempt on Mubarak's life since he was elevated to the presidency in 1981 after an Islamic radical group, Jihad, assassinatedPresident Anwar Sadatduring a military parade in Cairo. At a press conference, Mubarak vowed: "Whatever happens, Egypt will not be shaken and we will not give up fighting terrorism."
