KEYES . . . POWELL DOESN'T STAND A CHANCE
Dismissing polls showing that Colin Powell would make a very strong Republican candidate for president,GOP contender and radio talk-show host Alan Keyestold TIME today that is it not possible for Powell to win the GOP nomination. "It's not going to fly. Republicans are not going to nominate a pro-choice anybody," said Keyes, citing Powell's description of himself as a fiscal conservative and social liberal as evidence that Powell supports the right of women to choose abortion. Keyes, a former Reagan Assistant Secretary of State for International Organizations who staunchly opposes abortion, as well as affirmative action, maintains that moderate positions on choice are already damaging the candidacies of Sens. Phil Gramm and Bob Dole.
