HOSTAGES AT RISK IN KASHMIR
Five hostages held by Kashmiri separatists "may be killed at any time" as the second deadline to free 21 jailed militants was ignored by Indian authorities. In a tape recording released to the Associated Press, two Britons, a German, a Norwegian, and American Donald Hutchings described themselves as "OK" while making desperate appeals "to the American government and the Indian government for help." More than 11,600 lives have been claimed in Jammu-Kashmir, where Muslim rebels have been fighting for independence for more than five years. Refusing to discuss details, Indian spokesman Arif Khan said from New Delhi: "The kidnappings in Kashmir are obviously instigated, aided and abetted from across the border," in Pakistan. Military efforts to locate the hostages commenced July 4th.
