WAR CHEST WATCH . . . CLINTON BY A NOSE
President Clinton's re-election effort has raised more than $9.3 million in its first three months, White House officials said today. The amount gives the President a slight ($56,000) edge over GOP frontrunner Bob Dole during the same stretch (April to June). Dole's leading Republican rival, Sen. Phil Gramm of Texas, raised only $3.5 million in that time, but he managed a $4.6 million spending spree. Clinton, who expects no primarily challenge, would have a fundraising edge. Does it matter? Clinton himself bested George Bush in 1992 after the the former President racked up $9.9 million in his first quarter.
