DEATH TOLL UNKNOWN AFTER SOUTH KOREAN STORM

South Korean disaster officials struggled to restore communications today and feared as many as 50 and perhaps more perished as a result ofThyphoonFaye, whose 102 mile per hour winds ripped through parts of South Korea Sunday causing extensive flooding, and wrecking an oil tanker. Though hampered by rough seas and thick fog, some 30 rescue boats attemped to contain a 3-mile wide, 25.6 million gallon crude oil leak that poured out of the stricken tanker as it drifted, shrouded in smoke, into a national sea park. Fish farms nearby are imperiled. The gale left a swath of destruction: overturned cars, uprooted trees, submerged houses, and streets flooded waist-deep. Preliminary property damage estimates were $35 million.EAT YOUR BRUSSELS SPROUTS! Correcting a simple vitamin deficiency might prevent up to 40 percent of theheart attacks and strokessuffered by American men. Solution: eat more leafy green vegetables, such as brussel sprouts and spinach, and such fruits as apples and oranges. That's the conclusion reached by Dr. Judith Hall, ageneticistwho analyzed dozens of medical studies. Dr. Hall found that folic acid, a natural substance found in many fruits and vegetables as well as in most multivitamin supplements, could halve the rate of birth defects and reduce heart attack and stroke by a third or more. Hall is pressuring the Food and Drug Administration to require that the vitamin be added to wheat, rice and corn, since those foods are prominent in the average person's diet.
