DOLLAR'S SURGE DAMPENS DOW
Blue-chip stocks slipped as the dollar surged to its highest level in nearly six months. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 19.02 to 4640.84. On the New York Stock Exchange, advances led declines 1,180 to 1,035 on a volume of 330 million shares. The Nasdaq composite index dropped slightly, finishin down 0.07 at 1,012.37. The S & P index fell 1.17 to 558.57. In London, gold closed at $386.45, up $2.45.
