THE MARKETS
A fresh rally in high technology stocks propelled the Nasdaq index up 13.38 points to a record high of 1,025.75, beating its previous record of 1,012.44 set Monday. The Dow Jones industrial average ended down 1.76 points at 4,639.08. On the New York Stock Exchange advancing issues beat losers, 1,374 to 874. The Standard & Poor's 500 rose 1.40 to 559.97. And in London, gold dropped $3.45 to $383.00.
