THE MARKETS

In a light day of trading, the Nasdaq Composite was the big winner today, closing up 2.90 at 1028.19. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 35.57 to close at 4584.85. The Standard and Poor's 500 was also down, closing at 557.14, a decline of 2.38. On the New York Stock Exchange, decliners let advancers 1285 to 905 on modest volume of 291 million. And in London, gold closed at $383.25, down .80.
