THE MARKETS

Records were set today for the New York Stock Exchange, S & P 500, Nasdaq and the American Stock Exchange. Encouraged by last week's 53-point gain for the Dow Industrial average, the Dow rose 4.22 points to end the day at 4,704.94. The Standard & Poor's 500 stocks rose 1.23 to end at 573.91. The market value index at the American Stock Exchange rose 2.96 to 550.35. The Nasdaq composite was up 6.46 to close at 1,066.49. At the New York Stock Exchange advancers led decliners 1,178 to1,084. Finally, in London, gold closed down slightly, $0.30, to end the day at $382.35.
