HEBRON RIOTS GROW

Israeli soldiers used stun grenades against an angry mob of about 2,000 Palestinian students, who marched through the streets of Hebron shouting "We don't want settlers here," and pelting the soldiers with rocks and bottles. Some 450 Israeli settlers live among about 120,000 Palestinians in Hebron. The growing violence is not expected to derail negotiations on Hebron autonomy between Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and PLO leader Yasser Arafat. "If the suicide bombers haven't been able to disrupt the negotiations, then a bunch of rock-throwing kids certainly aren't going to be able to do it either," reports Jean Max in Jerusalem. "Both sides have too much to lose. Arafat would lose the West Bank, and the Israeli leadership would lose their political careers. Neither side wants that."
