THE MARKETS
Wall Street braced for Tuesday's meeting of the policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee, which reviews monetary policy. Heavy selling in technology stocks hurt the Nasdaq composite, which finished the day down 7.24, falling to1046.15. The Dow Jones industrial average ended up 5.78 points at 4,769.93. The New York Stock Exchange composite was down slightly, 0.12 to 311.76. In the broader market, decliners led advancers 1335 to 891 on light trading of 269 million shares. The Standard & Poor's 500 Stocks was up 0.08 to 581.81. In London, gold closed at $382.95, down $0.80.
