POWELL TO FARRAKHAN . . . NO THANKS

Colin Powell says a scheduling conflict will prevent him from participating in next Monday's Million Man March in Washington, D.C., led by Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan. "Nobody really expected Powell to join the march," says TIME's Sylvestor Monroe. "It is a no-win situation for him. If he goes, he starts a firestorm with white people who think he's supporting Farrakhan. If he doesn't, he looks like he does not support what the march is supposed to be about, which is black self-sufficiency and family strength."
