GOING HILLARY ONE BETTER

Liddy Dole would be a different kind of First Lady. She told the Associated Press today that if her husband becomes president, she would continue as president of the American Red Cross, a position she's held for almost five years. That would make her the first presidential wife ever to maintain full-time employment outside the White House. TIME's Jay Carney predicts Americans would accept the idea, in part because Dole has held the job for so long, but also because of Hillary Clinton's legacy. "Mrs. Clinton, despite the controversy surrounding her prominent role in the Clinton administration, has cut a lot of ground for future First Ladies. The American public hasn't always been comfortable with the President's wife holding a job." Previously, Mrs. Dole served as President Reagan's Transportation Department Head and later as Labor secretary for George Bush.
