THE MARKETS

Stocks closed down 31.07 points at 5,074.49, marking the end of six straight days setting new highs on the Dow Jones industrial average. Despite the drop, advancing issues led decliners by about 4 to 3. The S&P 500 also closed down 2.27 points to finish at 605.37. On the Nasdaq, the composite index eased 0.17 to 1,057.40. And in London, gold ended up at $388.15, down $1.50.
