THE REAL JOE
Mrs. Waldholtz told reporters she thought she knew "the real Joe Waldholtz," who had arranged for surgery for a pal who couldn't afford it, sent meals to ailing friends and rescued a lost dog. "I knew Joe was abrasive and I knew a lot of people didn't like him," she said. "But I believed that I knew the real Joe Waldholtz, who would do all of those things. And whenever I said to him, 'Joe, if only people knew what a teddy bear you are inside,' he would grimace and say, 'Don't tell anyone. It will ruin my reputation.' That's the Joe Waldholtz I thought I was marrying." Through tears, she cautioned her constituents: "When you go home tonight, and you're with the person you love most in the world, and they're holding you as you go to sleep and they tell you that they love you and that you're the love of their life, ask yourself if they're capable of what I've just told you."
