THE DISARMAMENT BEGINS

American military officials report that the Bosnian Serb military is beginning to dismantle its anti-aircraft radar installations, one of the main sources of worry to military planners. "These are indications that things are going to go well," said Air Force Lt. Gen. Howell Estes, director of operations for of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Estes also says that foreign fighters, mostly Muslims from Pakistan and Iran known as muhajadeen, are packing their bags. The muhajadeen, who are virulently anti-Western, represented another major threat to American soldiers in Bosnia. Newt Gingrich had written to President Clinton expressing concern that "Iranian personnel and the mujahedeen fighters may target American forces and other U.S. government personnel."
