The Markets
The Dow Jones industrial average rose sharply Tuesday, gaining 44.44 points to end the day at 5,088.22. The New York Stock Exchange composite index gained 3.54 points to close at 325.83. On the Big Board, advancers led decliners 1,430 to 950 with 712 unchanged. Volume was heavy with 422.23 shares traded. The technology-heavy Nasdaq was up 7.29 to close at 995.86. The Standard & Poor's 500 stocks were up 8.62 to finish at 608.44. The American Stock Exchange market value index lost 0.79, to close at 531.91. In London, gold closed at $397.10, up $1.90.
