LOS ANGELES: In his first television interview since his acquittal on murder charges, O.J. Simpson was animated and occasionally angry Wednesday night taking questions from Black Entertainment Television news anchor Ed Gordon. "I don't think going on national television was a good idea," says TIME's Patrick Cole. "He was clearly struggling to be liked and accepted, and that came across. He also may have damaged his civil case by stressing how much he loves golf and how often he has played it for the last ten years. In the criminal case, his attorneys tried to portray him as someone who could not have committed the murders because he was debilitated from his arthritis. He also looked bad shamelessly plugging his video." Simpson's performance did seem to have its intended effect: producers of his $29.95 video claimed to have received more than 30,000 orders after the interview.
