The Markets
The Dow Jones industrial average fell today to 5,458.53, losing 44.79 points. Trading was lighter today, totaling 395.02 million shares as compared with 432.38 million in the previous session. The NYSE composite index fell 3.92 to 342.27, and the Standard & Poor's 500-stock index fell 7.33 to 640.65. The Nasdaq composite index fell 9.00 to 1,081.71, and the AMEX market value index fell 3.32 to 558.52. In London gold closed at $402.25 off $3.35.
