The Dow Jones industrial average closed Friday up 50.94 points at 5,536.56. Advancing issues led decliners on the New York Stock Exchange by about 8 to 5 late in the day on a moderately heavy volume of 471.36 million shares as of 4 p.m. The NYSE composite index roxe 2.38 to 345.18, while the S & P's index rose 3.94 to 644.37. On the Nasdaq, the index fell 13.97 to 1,086.08. And in London, gold closed down $1.60 at $398.95.
