Clinton To Announce 1997 Budget Plan

WASHINGTON, D.C.: President Clinton will present his $1.6 trillion 1997 budget on Tuesday, despite a deadlock over the current budget which has kept Congress scrambling to finance government agencies for 1996. Following an outline he released six weeks ago, Clinton will describe his fiscal vision for a balanced budget by the year 2002: tax cuts for families, billions in savings from Medicare, welfare and other benefit programs, and increased spending on the environment, education and advanced technology. Some of the specific measures Clinton will introduce: spending some $25.6 billion for the Education Department, $7 billion for the Environmental Protection Agency, and a reduction of 31,000 federal jobs.
