The Dow industrials advanced 20.32 points to 5,648.35. Declining issues outnumbered advancers by about 7 to 5 on the New York Stock Exchange, with a moderate volume of 375.29 million shares as of 4 p.m. The Standard & Poor's 500 fell 0.10 to 661.96, while the Nasdaq dropped 3.81 to 1,179.27. And in London, gold finished at $385.85, up $1.10.
