The opening ceremony, marking the 100th anniversary of the games,
kicked off 16 days of
sporting events in which more than 10,000 athletes from a record 197
countries were scheduled to compete. For the first time in history,
all invited delegations attended the games, including Vietnam, which
had never before participated in an Olympic Games hosted by the U.S.
