This Person of the Year episode features Winston Churchill, the master statesman, who in 1940, stood alone against fascism and renewed the world's faith in the superiority of democracy. Churchill was named TIME's Man of the Year for 1940.

MAN OF THE YEAR, 1961

This Person of the Year episode features John F. Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States, who became the country's youngest-elected and first Roman Catholic President after a narrow-margin victory in the popular vote over Richard M Nixon. Kennedy was named TIME's Man of the Year for 1961 following his crucial first year in office.

In making its selection for Man of the Year for 1982, TIME reasoned that: "There are some occasions when the most significant force in a year's news is not a single individual but a process, and a widespread recognition that this process is changing the course of all other processes." TIME's Man of the Year for 1982 - the greatest influence for good or evil - is not a man at all. It is a machine: the computer.
