While working on a 1963 story for Esquire Magazine about the hot rod culture of Southern California, Wolfe shipped his story in the form of a letter and his editor, Byron Dobell simply removed the words "Dear Byron" from the top of the document and published it as "There Goes (Varoom! Varoom!) That Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby."
