Even though the the new breed of coaster, with its high-tech design and materials, provides thrills impossible to imagine a century ago, sometimes the best rides are still the old ones of simple wood and steel.

Whether you're a curious wimp interested in finding the coasters that won't petrify you, or a hard-core aficionado seeking the details on your favorite rides, the Internet has a staggering amount to roller coaster information. A comprehensive database is, well, the Roller Coaster Database, which lists most of the worlds major coasters, with links to photos and press releases. The site also has a good record system that allows you to find the fastest, highest and longest coasters on each continent or in the world.

Thrillride! has links to other coaster sites, news and rumors, reviews and chat boards.

Disney just skims the surface of the many rides at its many parks, with short descriptions of each. But the Cedar Point amusement park has a solid site with a rating system to let riders know how scary each ride is, as well as a guide to the most economic food options, and a schedule with advice on how best to conquer the park in one day.

Coaster Gallery has hundreds of pictures from coasters all over the country, and Roller Coaster Fans is packed with the photos and reviews of the truly obsessed.
