A Hot Summer Gets Hotter
Wildfires sweep across 10 western states, consuming more than 375,000 acres of wilderness


The Virginia Lakes wildfire burns southeast of Okanogan, Wash., early Wednesday morning, Aug. 15, 2001. The fire had burned about 27,000 acres on the Colville Indian Reservation, destroying six homes and threatening another 50.
