THEODORE ROOSEVELT, 1901: Teddy Roosevelt was the youngest man ever to become president when he came into office September 13, 1901, after the assassination of William McKinley. The urgency of the situation made for a hastily improvised wearing-in; Roosevelt was summoned from the Adirondacks to Buffalo, where McKinley had died, and at a mansion there was sworn in by a judge without even using a Bible. He was then escorted to the Capitol by a retinue of Rough Riders on horseback.
