WOODROW WILSON, 1913: The first Democratic president in 20 years at the time of his inauguration, Wilson noticed during the ceremony that the West Point cadets parading in front of the platform were keeping the public out of hearing range, and waved for the crowd to approach, saying "Let the people come in." The ball that had been planned for that evening was vetoed by the President, who considered it too frivolous for the occasion. |
