Photographer's Bio: Yuri Kozyrev
A native of Russia, Yuri Kozyrev has been covering the former Soviet Union and the rest of the world since becoming a professional photographer in 1986. During that time, he has covered wars in Chechnya and other areas of the former USSR. He has also photographed more peaceful subjects, such as whales and baby seals on Russia's White Sea.
Currently Kozyrev works for the Los Angeles Times and also does freelance work for such prominent publications as the Times of London (Great Britain), TIME magazine (USA), Het Parool (the Netherlands), Elseiver (the Netherlands). Previously, he shot for The Katz Pictures (Great Britain) for five years, from 1991 to 1995. The Jury of the 43rd World Press Photo Contest awarded him the 1st and 3rd prizes for general news stories for a series on Russian troops in Chechnya.
