This week, for millions of Americans, that innocent inquiry was enough to elicit a swift kick in the shins or a stream of expletives. Soggy, scorching weather suffocated the Midwest and Northeast, while the Southwest baked under 100+ degree temperatures. The heat wave kept tempers short and power supplies even shorter — but on a more positive note, the weather kept imaginations active: You have to be creative, after all, to beat this kind of heat.
