"If you want a friend in Washington," Harry Truman once advised, "get a dog." Apparently, he was onto something almost every First Family, from George and Martha Washington (who had 36 canine companions) to Bill and Hillary Clinton (whose dog and cat are still enmeshed in a nationally scrutinized power struggle) have shared the White House with some kind of animal. Feathered, finned or furry, presidential pets often speak volumes about their adoptive families and telegraph a very specific image to the electorate. |
