Other pets are notable for their polarizing effects: Socks, Chelsea Clinton's black and white cat, has been forced to share the spotlight since the arrival of Buddy, President Clinton's beloved chocolate Lab. While both animals receive baskets of fan mail each week, neither commands a clear majority of acclaim — and so Socks and Buddy prepare to leave their Washington home without a mandate from the people. While Buddy will accompany the President in his post-office travels, Socks' future is less certain. Negotiations are reportedly under way to place the cat in the care of presidential assistant Betty Currie, who is rumored to be pleased with these plans. No word yet from Socks' spokespeople.
