Sometimes, longtime family pets just don't make it past the transition team. Ernie, a long-haired orange cat, has been a fixture in George and Laura Bush's home in Texas for years, but he won't be making the trip to Washington. Reports on Ernie's behavior vary, but some Bush aides say the cat is prone to scratching the furniture (not likely to go over too well in the official residence) while others will only say, diplomatically, that Ernie "is a free spirit" who cannot be contained by mere fences and doors. The cat will live with family friends in California. Despite Ernie's absence, the presidential residence will not be fur-free during the next administration: Willie, a short-haired cat; a Scottish terrier puppy named Barney; and Spot, one of George and Barbara's dog Millie's children, will all accompany the new First Family to the White House. |
