LBJ was an animal lover, doting on his horses and his dogs, two of which nearly stole the national spotlight from their master. Animal rights groups rushed to the defense of the President's beagles, cleverly named Him and Her, when Johnson was photographed lifting the dogs by their ears. The President chuckled at the frenzy of attention, claiming he'd demonstrated the proper way to carry the breed.
