"BABE" DIDRIKSON ZAHARIAS
The last woman before Annika Sorenstam to tee it up with the men at a PGA event was Mildred "Babe" Didrikson Zaharias, a superb athlete who made the 36-hole cut at the 1945 Los Angeles Open before being eliminated the next day after scoring a 79. It was her second appearance in the event, having missed the cut seven years earlier. In her sporting career, Zaharias won 10 major golf championships, picked up two gold medals and one silver in track and field events at the 1932 Olympics and was named the Associated Press' Female Athlete of the Year a record six times.
