The Old Man and the Bat:
Williams always had a contentious relationship to baseball. As a rookie, he told a sportswriter he'd rather be a fireman; after he retired in 1960 he spent much of his time away from the game fishing. But he was always drawn back, as a manager of two big league teams and as an exec for the Red Sox. In Boston, he never really went away.
