The lonely road: When Bill Bradley walked an Iowa byway with his wife, Ernestine, in the days leading up to that state's presidential caucus, he had no idea where his insurgent campaign would lead. Ultimately, he finished second to Al Gore in Iowa on Jan. 24 and second in New Hampshire's primary on Feb. 1, and then was throttled in the Super Tuesday primaries of March 7. He abandoned the race two days later.
