Easter Island Statues; Chile
Named for the day they were discovered—on Easter Sunday in 1722—the stone statues are each about 85 ft. high. The origin of the sculptures still puzzle historians and archaeologists today, although it is believed that a Polynesian society settled on Easter Island in the 4th century and established a tradition of monumental sculpture.
