Naturally a herd animal, goats prefer company, and this tendency, when combined with their hardiness and strength, makes them ideal pack animals. They can carry up to 50 pounds — nearly one third of their body weight — into inaccessible places such as Wyoming's Red Desert, while their desire to stay together keeps them from wandering off.
