Bike to Work Day
In 1956, the League of American Bicyclists held their first-ever "Bike to Work" Day on the last Friday of May. The event has become a tradition throughout the U.S. and Canada and later inspired the creation of Bike Month. The League of American Bicyclists was founded in 1880, when bicyclists were known as "wheelmen." Thanks to the early efforts of the League of American Wheelmen, the government financed paved roads even before the creation of the automobile.
