Twain posed for this carte de visite in 1867, while traveling in Constantinople, Turkey. Having enjoyed a measure of success with the publication of The Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, Twain set off for a tour of the Mediterranean. It was during this trip that he wrote his famed travel book, The Innocents Abroad.
