Young Senator
Biden gained election to the Senate in 1972, at the age of 29. He turned 30, the minimum legal age for membership in the Senate, in the weeks after winning the vote. In this photograph, he poses with his two sons, Joseph Jr., left and Robert, and his wife Neilia, who was killed along with his daughter, in an automobile accident before her husband assumed office.
