Francis Bacon at London's Tate Gallery
John Minihan / Tate Gallery
Portrait of the Artist
Bacon was born in Ireland to English parents in 1909, but by the late 1920s he was living full time in London. By then he had already begun to draw and paint, but it would not be until after the end of World War II that he would be recognized and acclaimed. By the time of this photograph, in 1985, he was being honored with his second major retrospective at London's Tate Gallery.
