Piano was still in his thirties when he became famous for the wildly unconventional museum in Paris, which he co-designed with the British architect Richard Rogers. The Pompidou, which opened in 1977, was a building turned inside out, with ventilation ducts, structural supports and an escalator draped around the exterior.
